FT-Financial Times

FT-Financial Times

Financial Times World leading Business News The Challenge Tony Davis was approached to explore the possibility of creating designs using the Financial Times (FT) brand. The brand already had logo-stamped products for sale on demand. The company wanted to create the possibility of designs which has the same resonance as the Penguin Designs project. The main challenges were in identifying a ‘more-than-just-logo’ approach which had life beyond one-off, short-run, commissioned products. The FT is owned by Pearson. About Financial Times: For more about FT look here.  Project Overview & Solutions Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants - Epictetus There were a number of meetings about design approaches with John Ridding and Caroline Halliwell (Director of Brand and B2B Marketing). Colour, Logo, typography were all unique potentials for designed ranges. It was less clear whether the actual published output (stories, headlines etc – which tended to be quite serious) could be adapted even though this was a rich source of material. The main focus for prototyping was in typography, quotes on subject matter (economics, money etc) and layout designs for simple, stylish objects.  Whilst the project was only consultative it was nonetheless an exercise in exploring a challenging subject area via one of the world’s global brands whilst still maintaining a fitness-for-purpose ethos. Steven Appleby

Steven Appleby

Steven Appleby Steven Appleby is a cartoonist, illustrator and artist living in Britain. He is a dual citizen of the UK and Canada. His humour is usually observational or absurd. The Challenge Working with Steven isn’t a challenge at all. He’s interesting, eclectic, unpredictably energetic and generous in his creating and thinking to point of being new species (Homo Pinxit?). We hooked up because Steven created the wonderful Secret Thoughts of Cats (etc) series at the time with Bloomsbury (for whom he also created a great parody of their Diana logotype). What about the work? Well, the idea was to create a series of designs based on the Secret Thoughts Series (Men, Women, Cats, Babies). Seems simple enough? About Steven: Steven Appleby is one of this country’s leading cartoonists. He has published so many books that he is working on building a house out of books when he gets some spare time. His work currently appears regularly in the Guardian (who publish his Loomus Cartoon every week which everyone should read), The Times, the Sunday Telegraph, Junior and the Oldie. He lives in south London. See more at his website Steven Appleby (designed by Joe Davis) or read his newspaper ‘The Bubble of Truth’. Steven is represented by Conville Walsh if you want to commission him for something.  Project Overview & Solutions If a man loves the labour of his trade, apart from any question of success or fame, the gods have called him - Robert Louis Stevenson One of the problems (if it can be described as such) is the prolific nature of Steven’s work. There’s just so much to choose from....
Royal Opera House

Royal Opera House

Royal Opera House Of all the noises known to man, opera is the most expensive - Molière The Challenge To explore the Collections, Brand and House-style of the Royal Opera brand to create designs suitable for Friends of the Royal Opera House, exclusive retail online and the Royal Opera House Shop in Covent Garden. The project involved working with the Licensing manager Gwyneth Campling initially to explore the very large collection documenting its history both for ballet and opera. These works are a brilliant record of the nature of theatre, performance and the back stage elements which make up the history of the place. In addition, time was spent working with Robert Perry, the Manager of Retail and Merchandising. It is never easy getting to grips with a unique brand and retail operation but the opportunities were abundant to express these visually and with quality. About the Royal Opera House: The Royal Opera House is a major performing arts venue in London’s Covent Garden and is the home of The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. Each season: Over 600,000 people attend performances at Covent Garden 95,000 people participate in education and access events Over  2,000,000 listen to radio broadcasts Over 1,000,000 watch each televised performance. Project Overview & Solutions If a man loves the labour of his trade, apart from any question of success or fame, the gods have called him - Robert Louis Stevenson Although the Opera House Archive was rich in potential it was also very specific and the solution demanded more brand-focused designs for the project. A number of different ideas...
